9.24.06-Soma:San Diego, CA

"There's always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. In the past you could only accomplish these things by making a great effort and after years of hard moral training. Now, you swallow two or three half-gramme tablets, and there you are. Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears-that's what soma is." World Controller Mustapha Mond, Chapter 17, pg. 238 from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

This is our third time playing San Diego within about the last year (House of Blues w/ Mae, Epicentre, & SOMA), and it's a special place. As I strolled around the beach town of Encinitas, I heard conjunto music blaring out of a lower rider, and I immediately felt at home. I ordered a veggie burrito y una enchilada de queso con rice and beans, which I mixed up thoroughly. Orale! a la mexicana.

We had the day off before the SOMA show; we hung out with Drew from Switchfoot. He took us to the beach and a guitar show in Del Mar; we got some gear fixed and crashed a BBQ later that night. I never get over how beautiful it is here. Because it's always so new to me, I never get tired of the ocean; I know it just seems to blend into the background at times for the people of SoCal, and I can relate. When I lived in Miami, I'd begin to forget about the oceanand more about my hatred for the traffic. Regardless, there are a lot of people here that we love and treat us so nice.

On the day of the show, Greg began to get sick. He felt the illness creep up on him as the day's minutes went by. It's not easy staying healthy on the road. It takes a lot of effort and consciousness. Greg toughed it out like a true road warrior and played his heart out at the show. Afterward, he still was helping pack the trailer! I told him to go to the bus to rest. I'm so the mom of the tour bus at times. For example, Darren cut his wrist towards the end of the set; I mean literally sliced it open! I immediately urged him to wash it up, put on neosporin, and get a freaky tetanus booster shot. Forgive me for being such a parent, but I want to keep playing with one of the best drummers in the world, the lengendary Darren King!

Overall, the show had high energy but I think the sound was an issue. It was a difficult room to mix since it is so boomy. At times, I felt like it was a big wash on stage. Anyway, we live and learn. It was a good time (as you can see Israel [who is our tour filmographer and video blog editor] down below displaying his feelings of joy), and I met some wonderful people after the show . . . (Eric, Cristy, Paul, Francisco, etc.) I appreciate everyone who came out to support us. Thanks for the love. Hasta pronto!

I'm glad someone takes care of these guys. :) Just make sure you take care of yourself as well. Sometimes "moms" forget to do that. LOL

BTW, you aren't going to yell at me for bringing Darren junk food are you? :)
