TRIAD: A SUCCESS!!!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the first annual Triad Music Conference. We had a blast! All the students involved really enjoyed the master classes, rhythm clinic, and student concert. Can't wait for the next year. A video summing up the event should be posted soon. In the meanwhile, here's a pic of DK teaching a class:

On a side note, my 20 year reunion with my old punk band IPM was absolutely amazing. Below are some pictures of the event (taken by Evana Vleck, who helped put the show together):

Response to Recent Triad Comment

Not too long ago, Matt wrote this comment concerning Triad:

"Hey Roy, I play drums and my friend Tom plays Bass. Bottom line is that we are quite interested in going to the Triad Music Conference (And I mean QUITE). However, we live in Houston and my parents aren't really that comfortable with us being so close to the border. Is it a possibility that you and Darren would possibly hold another workshop in Houston? Hopefully we are able to make it one the 19th. Mutemath has definitely been a major influence in our band and in my playing style. Thanks and God Bless, Matt"

Let me just say that if I thought there would be some kind of danger holding such an event in McAllen, I would never consider holding it in my hometown. Yes, there has been some rough stuff happening on the Mexican side of the border in Matamoros and Reynosa, but this hasn't spilled over into McAllen. I assure you that this event will be an entertaining and safe time. Thanks for your interest. Hope to see you there...

Triad Music Conference is coming upon us!

So, to alleviate some of the confusion regarding what Triad is all about, we decided to change the name to "TRIAD MUSIC CONFERENCE."

Below is a flyer with some info about the date and who will be attending as special featured guests: (DECEMBER 19, 2010, MCALLEN, TEXAS: A UNIQUE MUSIC CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE WITH SPECIAL PERFORMANCES AND TEACHINGS BY DARREN KING, AARON BEAUMONT, AND STACY DUPREE).

If you'd like to attend, simply call the number on the flyer.

If you'd like to help out to promote it, simply print the flyer below and distribute it. (Just click on the image and save in order to print.)

If you'd like to do nothing, then at least just read this post...

Facebook Impersonator Update

Well, it seems that my Facebook impersonator page has been taken down. Even my post about the impersonator on my personal, private FB page was taken down, which I thought was a bit strange. What exactly is going on with FB? Don't you think we, the public, give them too much power, too much information,  and too much of our time?
Anyway, I didn't mention it in my last post, but before posting my notice, I did report the page as some of my readers suggested (selecting the "impersonating" standard option). Thanks for the support and help by the way.
Wow! Does this happen so much at FB that they have a standard option for impersonation? I mean, it is the second choice one can make while reporting a page!
I still don't know who it was, but I'd like to know. It wasn't so much that he or she wrote anything bad in my name or was doing mischief with my name, but rather, he or she never disclosed that it wasn't me. Nor did he or she try to ask me permission to take create such a page. Moreover, what concerns me is that I don't think people realize that this is criminal (just like illegally downloading music!).

Here's a definition:

Criminal impersonation is a crime that is governed by states laws, which vary by state. It may involve, among other acts:
(1) assuming a false identity with the intent to defraud another; (2) pretending to be a representative of another person or organization; or (3) opening a bank account or securing credit in the name of another person without the other person's consent.
The following is an example of a state statute dealing with criminal impersonation:
(1) A person commits criminal impersonation if he knowingly assumes a false or fictitious identity or capacity, and in such identity or capacity he: (d) Does an act which if done by the person falsely impersonated, might subject such person to an action or special proceeding, civil or criminal, or to liability, charge, forfeiture, or penalty; or (e) Does any other act with intent to unlawfully gain a benefit for himself or another or to injure or defraud another.

Thanks for reading. Stay safe.

My Own Facebook Impersonator

Today, I found my own facebook impersonator (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Roy-Mitchell-Cardenas/113145925379330)! Unfortunately, whoever is running this page does not let people know that it's a "fan" page and not really me.  Also, I can't send this person a personal message to inquire who he or she is. I do have a FB page, but it's completely for family and close friends. So, if you think you have found me on FB, guess again . . .  If you know who runs this page, please tell them to shut it down. Thanks.

All is not what it seems, especially on the internet.

Thanks for the Support

Thanks to all who have made donations to my website recently. I appreciate the love and support.

Also, thanks to all of you who came out to the last batch of shows; I know it was a sacrifice in many cases, but you endured (along with us). Now, we are moving on to the next stage, in which MM will be writing and recording for a new album, sprinkled with some international shows in Asia and South America.

MM Spanish Bio:

1950s Kay Upright Bass, Flood Damage Photos

Thanks to Levi for taking these pictures and going to check out the damage while we are out on the road. Without question, it was a lot harder to look at these photos than I thought it would be. I keep thinking of all my memories with this bass: from straight ahead jazz and salsa gigs in South Texas to MM recording sessions and touring. With the help of my parents, I bought this bass in 1997 from a student at UNT, and I started lessons there with various teachers, learning the basics in classical and jazz.

Then, with the help of Salvador Giardina (one of the best luthiers in the country), we modified the bass to be amplified and adjusted to my playing style. I firmly believe that with lots of time and money this bass can be restored, and that will be my aim in the near future.

Pictures from the Road: Philly to Omaha

A lot has happen since my last post: too much, actually. I feel overwhelmed by current events, from the bombing scares in Time Square and horrible oil spills in the Gulf to the ridiculous immigration laws in Arizona and devastating flooding of Nashville; also, I'm having to balance my family life while on the road. Welcome to my world.

After D.C., we found out that Charlotte was cancelled, which turned out to be a blessing for me because I got to go home early to Miami, spending one more day with my family, who I only see once on this tour of six weeks. By the way, the cancelled shows will be made up, and I'm sorry it had to happen.

We played Miami Beach, which was wonderful, and then went on to play memorable shows in Orlando, Atlanta, and Memphis (Limp Bizkit stole of the festival - yes, it's a guilty pleasure). Then, as soon as we got out of Memphis the rain started to come down hard, and as we made our way back to the east coast, the unbelievable news of Nashville (my home for three years) flooding took me by surprise. Many of our crew and other friends were affected adversely by this devastating event; not too mention, I think I've lost my 1950s upright Kay bass in the flood. Most likely, my blonde baby that was used to record "Obsolete" and other songs is in pieces now. I will soon be receiving pictures of the damage. Many of you have seen the picture of the MM van underwater. But all of this "gear and vehicle loss" seems trite in comparison with other stories I've heard. I'm confident that Nashville will recover speedily, and I will do all I can to help in the process. If you are able to help, donate to a reliable charity, such as nashvilleredcross.org.

In all this bombardment of news and trying to process it all in the meanwhile, we made our way to NJ to Bamboozle, then back to St. Louis and on to Omaha. All in between, things have been moving along well; plus, every now and then, I remember I have a camera on my phone, and I decide to take some mediocre pictures.

Time Square: April 21, 2010.

Hurry up and wait, and by the way, try to stay out of trouble, maybe by writing some music.

Boston, NYC, & D.C. 4.20-24.09

Boston: House of Blues:

Being that it was the night of a Red Sox game, there was a lot of people roaming around. I enjoyed the sounds of bats cracking and fans cheering as I walked around the Fenway to the venue. We changed it up again that night, set list-wise:

1. The Nerve
2. Backfire
3. Armistice
4. Control
5. The Fight
6. Spotlight
7. Typical
8. Break the Same

New York City: Roseland Ballroom:

I only think of Portishead's DVD Live at Roseland every time I go by this venue, and was really stoked to finally play there. In NYC, we've played Knitting Factory twice, Avalon (which used to be the Limelight), B.B. King's, Irving Plaza twice, Gramercy Theater, Madison Square Garden (opening for Matchbox 20), and Roseland Ballroom.

Back to the right set list for this tour:

1. The Nerve
2. Armistice
3. Chaos
4. The Fight
5. Spotlight
6. Reset
7. Typical
8. Break the Same

D.c.: Bender Arena:

Big open spaces. Beautiful day. Fun show. Neon Trees did a cool shout-out to Fugazi's "Waiting Room." Unfortunately, not too many people got it.

Indio, CA: COACHELLA 2010

My stand-out moments of Coachella 2010 (not in any particular order):

Highlight 1: meeting DJ Lance from Yo Gabba Gabba.
Highlight 2: watching Phoenix perform.
Highlight 3: meeting fans at the signing.
Highlight 4: hanging out in the desert sun.

Downner 1: not getting to see Sly Stone.
Downner 2: not being able to hear much of anything on stage except drums.

Overall, cool experience.

Song in my head for the day:

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Chicago, IL: Aragon Ballroom

I love Chicago. Thanks Aragon.

Changing it up:

1. The Nerve
2. Armistice
3. Chaos
4. The Fight
5. Spotlight
6. Reset
7. Typical
8. Break the Same

Inspiration of the day:

Friday, April 16, 2010

Milwaukee, WI: Eagles Ballroom

Awesome feeling tonight at the show for me, that is, something reminiscent of the old days.

Set list was as follows:
1. The Nerve
2. Backfire
3. Armistice
4. Chaos
5. The Fight
6. Spotlight
7. Collapse
8. Typical
9. Break the Same

Bass inspiration of the day came from one of my all time favorite groups; they were very influential on me development as a young musician, too.

Thank you Jerry Scheff for laying this down for The Doors. Jim Morrison: R.I.P.

BASSLINE OF THE DAY:

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Springfield, IL: Off day

Off day in the Midwest:
sun in my face
music (NATURAL MYSTIC) in my soul
book (I WAS A ROBOT) in my hand
trees in the wind
fútbol on my feet
football in my hand
food in the belly
tea in the gully

BASSLINE OF THE DAY:

Tulsa, OK: Brady Theatre

Tulsa has always been good to us, and a great place to start off a tour. I think this was the first time not playing Cain's, but regardless, it was all good. The Rolling Stones got me going today. Thanks Bill Wyman. I hope the rest of the tour just gets better. Set list was:

1. Collapse
2. Typical
3. The Nerve
4. Chaos
5. Armistice
6. The Fight
7. Spotlight
8. Break the Same

BASSLINE OF THE DAY:

2010 Spring Tour

"Tour season" is starting up again for Mute Math, and I welcome it, hoping for wonderful, memorable experiences for all peoples in attendance. Recently while in Los Angeles, I found myself walking over the this star:

In accordance with such unplanned occurrences, I'd like to dedicate these next six weeks of touring to one of my personal musical heroes and influences: Jimi Hendrix. May his music and spirit live on . . .

Also, be on the lookout at mutemath.com for tour blogs from everyone in the band. I will still be posting more personal things here regarding MM, life, and of course, bass. So, here we go:

Armistice Bassline & The Death of the Album

I added this video to the heading of my blog, but decided to give it its own post here more clearly since I have gotten many requests for a breakdown of this bassline.

Second, THE DEATH OF THE ALBUM. It's sad to say that this might be where things are going because I think so many of us are missing out on the beauty of the art of the album (that is, an intended collection of songs which compliment each other) and unplanned, wonderful experiences in browsing thanks to either our rather poignant internet search skills or our computer-fed, narrowly genre-based diets. One very important aspect of "browser" has been unfortunately lost in "internet browser." Check out what this article has to say about it, and decide if you are still up for the ride . . . No One Listens to Albums Anymore. What's Next? By Brian Till -- The death of the album and the rise of the single perhaps mirrors the broader societal shift. The Internet makes the infinite accessible, yet, in the hours we spend tethered to the sprawling enigma, we tend to pursue what we already know, rather than search for the foreign.

iGeneration & Google

I want to share two good articles that relate to my life (and hopefully to some of yours.) The first one makes me think of my son: perhaps part of the iGeneration (although I really hate that term). Many things around him are related to technology, even though I try to spend a lot of time with him doing non-tech stuff, as you'll see in the video I just uploaded, but regardless, I'm fascinated by the way he'll view the world via all this "constant connectivity," such as with me uploading his video and him watching it in ten years. There is no doubt that with the blessings of this brave new world there comes many curses. I hope that this generation will learn to cope with it all.

Today's 'iGeneration' Has No Off Switch
By Sharon Jayson -- Today's kids don't remember a time without technology and the constant connectivity to the world that these technologies bring. One expert has dubbed this generation the "iGeneration," and it includes today's teens and middle-schoolers. Distinct iGeneration traits include early introduction to technology and a desire for immediacy.

Second, here's more on the constant impact of copyright law in our lives. Why is Google so concerned? It's a bit scary the power that this and other tech companies are gaining in the world.

Google Shuts Down Music Blogs Without Warning
By Sean Michaels -- In what critics are calling "musicblogocide 2010", Google has deleted at least six popular music blogs that it claims violated copyright law. These sites, hosted by Google's Blogger and Blogspot services, received notices only after their sites - and years of archives - were wiped from the internet.

Music Sales Cut In Half for Last Decade.

chart_music.top.gif

It's no doubt that this last decade has seen some major changes in the music
industry, for better and for worse. After watching some of the Grammy's
the other night, which I must say was a bit disheartening, it just makes me
think more about the future and where it is all going.

As reported by CNNMoney.com: "Total revenue from U.S. music sales and
licensing plunged to $6.3 billion in 2009, according to Forrester Research.
In 1999, that revenue figure topped $14.6 billion . . .

. . . But industry insiders and experts argue that the main culprit for the
industry's massive decline was the growing popularity of digital music."
